Sale swimmers proved this weekend that hard work in training equals success in competition. All 18 swimmers who competed at Warragul on Sunday have been attending regular sessions and training hard, and they came home with no less than

41 personal bests, 12 gold, 15 silver and 15 bronze medals

Our youngest club members showed that age is no boundary with Hayley Castle(7) winning Bronze in her 8&Under 50m Free. Sarah Morrison(7) and Hollie Rowand(6) also showed great determination. Sarah achieving a great time in her first 50m Fr and Hollie with improved times in all of her 25m events.

Megan Keil(8) dominated in the 8&Unders adding to her ever increasing medal tally with 3golds, 3silvers and a bronze.

Shaylee Wedlock(10) started the meet well winning gold in 9/10 girls 100m Fr in a personal best time, she then went on to win a further 3golds and 1silver. Also doing well in this age group were Stephanie Poland(10) who won bronze in her 50m Bk and maintained her good form of recent meets. Hannah Goodison(10) won bronze in the 50m Fr with a PB time, a silver in 100m BK and after a great effort in the 100m Fly showed that 50m Fly was no problem taking 2secs of her previous time. Julia Lee(10) won bronze in her first 200m IM and praise should also be given to her 7.73sec PB in her 100m Free.

Our 9year olds also showed great promise, with Emily Morrison showing good improvement in her Bk and Br, and Jordan Rowand attaining great PBs in her 50m Fr, Bk and Br.

The boys shouldn’t go unnoticed either. Aaron Castle (9) improved his 50m Br and John Lee (9) also showed good improvement in his 50m Fr with a 3.46sec PB and great effort in his first 50m Br.

In the 11/12 years age group Sophie Fox (11) made a great comeback after injury, winning 3 silver and 2 bronze medals. Melanie Smethurst (11) continues to see the results of her hard work, with PBs in 3 out of her 6 events.

Ian Melrose (11) increased his medal count, winning 1 silver and 6 bronze medals. Daniel Lee (12) also deserves congratulations, after smashing his 100m Fr PB by 8.19secs, his 50m Br by 5.39secs and also improving his times in the 100Bk and Br.

Completing the Lee Family successes, was Caroline (13), who continued in her winning form placing in 8 of her 10 events with 1 gold, 4 silver and 3 bronze in the 13/14 age group. Cameron Goodison (14) also returned, to competition, on great form winning 4 gold and 2 silver medals all in personal best times.

Well done everyone! Keep up the hard work at training so we can continue with these achievments and further improve!

Sarah Crowe, Rob Moore and Ashley Delaney

Sale’s own Olympic hero, Ashley Delaney, returned to where it all began, Sale Swimming Club, on Tuesday evening, September 2nd.

Delaney won a silver medal in the medley relay at the Beijing Olympics.

He returned to Sale to take young swimmers through his journey, starting from when he was eight years old up until the time he swum at Beijing in his first Olympic final.

Delaney shared his elation and excitement of making the Australian team, mixing with the elite of Australian swimming, the journey to Beijing and the experiences he had when he arrived.

He reminisced about his start with Sale swimming Club. It was at the annual school Friday night swimming carnival, and he swum in board shorts but won easily by about five metres. Afterwards, a swimming club member, Marg Dent, invited him to join the club, but he wasn’t sure at first, as he also wanted to play Rugby League.

He still holds the Sale long course records for 16 boys  100m freestyle and backstroke, and 50m butterfly.

At about 17, Delaney spent a brief time at Traralgon, before moving on to Nunawading Swimming Club after winning a scholarship. From there he won another scholarship to the Australian Institute of Sport, where he still trains with Coach Vince Raleigh.

Delaney encouraged the swimmers, telling of other Australian team members who originally came from country areas. He stressed it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to make it to the top, but it was all worth it.

Delaney also took the Sale Swimming Club target squads through a series of backstroke and freestyle drills he used himself at training.

Afterwards, Delaney was presented with a life membership from Sale Swimming Club and then was crowded by swimmers, past and present, waiting to congratulate him, get an autograph, and a chance to touch THE MEDAL.

Delaney's Olympic silver

A SWIM in the heats has given Sale swimmer Ashley Delaney a silver medal at the Beijing Olympics.

Delaney swam the backstroke leg in Australia's winning effort in the heats of the 4x100 metre medley relay on Saturday. Australia completely changed its line-up for Sunday's final with 100m breaststroke bronze medallist Hayden Stoeckel replacing Delaney. Australia finished second behind the United States, giving Michael Phelps a record eighth gold medal in the one Olympics. Both teams were inside the old world record set at the Athens Olympics. Delaney had missed a place in the final of the 200m backstroke after coming sixth in his semi-final in 1:57.73 minutes last Thurday. He recorded the 10th fastest time, less than a second from making the final. Earlier last week Delaney came fifth in the final of the 100m back.

An outstanding effort for a local swimmer who is only starting on his National Campaign.

Medal shows that Delaney is world class, 18 August 2008

Ashley Delaney's Olympic campaign has come to end. Although he returns home without an individual medal, Delaney ranks as one of the world's best backstroke swimmers.

He finishes his Olympic debut with a finals 5th place and a personal best time. He also swam in the 4 x 100 medley relay qualifying event which secured Australia a place in the final. The Australian team won a silver medal and, along with the finalists, members of the qualifying team also won a silver medal.

The 22-year old former Academy member, who now swims with the AIS in Canberra, struck form at the Australian Championships in March. He won the 100 metres backstroke in Australian record time and defeated former Olympic medallist, Matt Welsh. In the 200 metres event Delaney finished second to his rival Hayden Stoeckel.

Both swimmers were nominated for Beijing, with Delaney also selected for the FINA World Short Course Championships in April. The Championships were an important milestone for Delaney, and he won third place in the 50 metres backstroke as well as taking Australian short course records.

At Beijing however Delaney has been eclipsed by Stoeckel. Both swimmers made the 100 metres backstroke final with Stoeckel finishing in a dead-heated 3rd place. He had beaten Delaney, who was awarded 5th place, by just a touch.

In the 200 metres backstroke Delaney was eliminated in the semifinals while Stoeckel finished 6th in the final. Stoeckel also achieved Australian records in both backstroke events. In consequence, Stoeckel was selected into the 4 x 100 medley relay final in which Australia finished second. Delaney, less gloriously, swam only the qualifying round, but has also been awarded a silver medal.

In an interview during the Games Delaney generously praised Stoeckel's 100 metre performance, saying it had been inspirational to him.

With both Delaney and Stoeckel now firmly established at world level, who knows how much they will press each other to even greater results? May the inspiration continue!

FLAG CEREMONY RAISES SWIM EMOTIONS

KUALA LUMPUR, August 2: The Telstra Dolphins Australian Swim Team has wound up preparations for Beijing with an emotional flag presentation ceremony in Kuala Lumpur.

The team flies into Beijing on Sunday after an eight day training camp in the Malaysian capital buoyed by the ceremony that witnessed all 43 swimmers presented with an Australian flag.

It was the first time the entire team has participated in such a flag presentation and National Head Coach Alan Thompson, who worked with Senator Bill Heffernan to organise the flags as gifts from the Commonwealth, hopes to make the flag presentation a tradition on senior National swim teams.

The team will now focus on the move from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing and onto the uniform distribution and arrival at the Athletes Village.

Backstroker Ashley Delaney, who will swim both the 100 and 200 metres in his first Games, said

“It is a great tradition to start and most of us don’t have an Australian flag in our homes so to have one now and to have received it because we are going to the Olympics is pretty special,” Delaney said.

“It means so much more to have an Australian flag presented to us before the Olympics than just about anything someone could give us because it symbolises so much.”

Delaney also said the flag would have varying meanings throughout the team and the entire country.

“The flag means different things to different people but to me it means my family, my home and everything I’ve ever learnt,” Delaney said.

“It’s what we represent when we go away and something I’m very proud of.

“It’s the history of the country and everything good about Australia rolled up into one thing.”

Thompson said whilst the flag ceremony was both a proud and exciting moment for the team, it was important to now keep emotions balanced.

“As we wind things up here in Kuala Lumpur things are going well and every day gets you a little closer to where you want to be,” Thompson said.

“Whilst it’s probably an unusual feeling, because people at home would be over excited at this stage, I think these guys are able to take it in their stride.

“They have to plan for each day until the start of competition and I am sure there’ll be the normal nerves they have before a competition, but it is important to keep the excitement levels and the emotion on a fairly even keel.

“We’ve had a couple of little outings here in Kuala Lumpur that the kids have done and we have shown movies and the Spirit of Australian Sport – Swimming documentary that was on the History Channel back home this week.

“All of those sorts of things help to take your mind off things for a while and help the swimmers to relax between training sessions.”

Four years ago in Athens several swimmers were overwhelmed by the occasion when they first walked into the competition pool but Thompson believes the group will be able to keep their emotions in check when they get their first look at the futuristic Water Cube pool on Monday.

“They have seen photos and footage of the pool and the first day will be more about having a look around and an exploration for them,” Thompson said.

“One thing I said when I was over their in February when I first saw the pool is that it should be a great comfort level for our swimmers because it is pretty much the same interior design as the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre and therefore it’s going to seem very familiar.”

The team, which reports all members fit and healthy, will arrive in Beijing just after 3pm local time on Sunday

Dads in the Bairnsdale Pool

Sale Dads at Bairnsdale

Five Sale Swimming Club dads took to the pool at the Bairnsdale Open Interclub Swim Meet, January 12th, cheered on by enthusiastic spectators.

They all hope to swim in the 35 & Over races at the Gippsland Championships to be held at Sale from the 8-10 March.

They all managed to complete the 100m freestyle race. David Keil, Peter Lee and Gavin Ballinger put in outstanding performances except for the bellywackers at the start. Swimmers Go Sunsmart At The Tom Osborne Meet, December 2nd

New Club Hats

Sale Swimming Club members were given protective sun hats at the Tom Osborne Swim meet last weekend, just in time for the hot summmer season..

The hats were purchased at the request of Andy Barnes, who has been with the club for over 30 years and has had personal experience with skin cancer. At the meet, he handed out the hats to swimmers and gave a talk about the importance of developing sun smart habits.

The swimmers were thrilled with their new look and paraded in their new hats for the remainder of the day. The hats were supplied by Noddy’s Menswear who embroidered the club logo and generously added extra caps to the total.

The purchase of the hats was made possible by a Sunsmart sporting uniform grant from the Department of Victorian Communities.

This meet  included the last Camp 21 session. Swimmers who took part were given a certificate of participation. We are sure to see more of these talented and dedicated young swimmers, who worked very hard with early morning starts and long days attending the following swim meets at the three sessions. .

The interruptions to training due to ongoing pool renovations did have an impact on the performance of swimmers but there were some good results overall, including some very good PB's from some of the younger swimmers. 8 yr old Aaron Castle, who is the grandson of  Tom Osborne, was thrilled to win the breastroke for his grandad.

One of the day's highlights for the swimmers was being able to play in the outside pools during breaks. This was especially appreciated as the day was quite hot and humid.
